Rule Education

There are certain soccer rules that cause the most controversy mostly because the rules aren't what people think they are or just how much room there is for the referees' judgement during the course of play.

The long-time coach writing this was watching his 16 year-old son sideline-referee a U10 game and thought he saw his son miss an offsides call.  The father questioned his son.  The son then explained why it was NOT offsides putting his father in his ignorant place because he hadn't ever been a referee.  The moral of the story is "the rules aren't what you think they are!"

Below are explanations for some of the most commonly miss-understood rules.

Offsides

A "hands" call doesn't happen just because a player touches the ball with one's hands...

Offsides

Offsides is one of the least understood rules.  The timing of the events is extremely important...and whether a player is even part of the play or not!

The Build-out Line typically used in U10 is another source of miss-understanding and what it is aimed at teaching.
